The Special Collections Research Center is pleased to announce a new addition to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Equity Records is now accessible to researchers. This addition includes files of Dr. Lawrence Clark, who was Assistant Provost for Affirmative Action from 1974 to 1982. He advanced to the position of Associate Provost in 1982. He served in that capacity until 1995.
Dr. Clark, a math professor, was the second African American to serve as a university administrator. In addition to teaching math, he helped to found the African American Cultural Center, the African American Symposium, the Peer Mentor program, the Brotherhood Dinner (which brought together leaders from State, Shaw University, and St. Augustine’s College), and an annual student trip to West Africa. He passed away in 2012, being remembered as a pioneer of inclusion.
This addition documents the university’s procedures and policies regarding topics that are still crucial today: accessibility, equity, and compliance with Title IX. It contains materials describing NC State’s first efforts in dealing with some of these complex issues, including how the University implemented federal directives. The addition contains correspondence, statistics, data, pamphlets, and reports. Topics include the recruitment of African American students and employees, treatment of women, and accessibility for people with disabilities.
In July of 2011, the office of Equal Opportunity, Equity, and Compliance became a unit under the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity. As of 2020, Equal Opportunity and Equity provides training, resources and assistance to address and end discrimination and harassment at NC State. Areas of focus include accommodations and accessibility, discrimination and harassment, Equal Employment Opportunity and affirmative action, pregnancy, and Title IX.
Special Collections would like to thank Katelyn Cuomo for her work on processing this addition.
